Facebook Scares Me

Posted by benjamin

People find me. It's not like I am hiding but all I did was add my name to an internet website and boom, I am exposed to the world.  It's not like I didn't know it would happen. I did, and I still fell for the peer pressure to join the crowd. Everybody is doing it so it must be good, so why do I have this sinking feeling in the pit of my stomache that at any moment it could all go horribly wrong.

Cause I am a born pessimist. A firm believer in Murphy's Law. Facebook, or social networking in general, appears to be a warm fuzzy but there is surely a cold prickly side to it. People sign up for these services that allow them to build a bubble of all their friends, people they wish were their friends, people their friends are friends with and even people they might have met in a club one time when they were drunk but hey as long as it adds to their count of friends it must be good. Amazingly they are now more popular than they were in high school. But are they really your friends? Do you really want to know what they are doing or do you just want them to know what you are doing so you feel more important?

Now that we are in this bubble and it is so warm and fuzzy what could possibly be the harm of it? We all have lots of friends that are doing lots of things and now there are adds trying to sell us lots of stuff, our friends did something now we gotta do it to. I was having a hard enough time keeping up with the Jones' now I got to keep up with the entire internet. Well it is 'The Internet' so I guess I could lie.

With all this personal information out in the cloud all pretext of privacy has been obliterated. We don't know who is collecting this information or for what means and as far as I can tell we don't really care. The bubble makes us happy, makes us deaf dumb and blind to anything outside of it and I guess that is not such a bad place to be. Make room for one more I am jumping in!

Always poke the sleeping bear. It makes life more interesting even if it shortens it significantly.
